Classic Shrimp Cocktail

I simply love this Classic shrimp cocktail. The sauce is great with other seafood too. I suggest adding some hot sauce to it. Have plenty of lemon slices and napkins ready! Enjoy!

Recipe adapted from The Dean & Deluca CookBook

Classic Shrimp Cocktail
(Printable Recipe)

3 Quarts Water
3 Tbsp Coarse Salt
2 lb Large Shrimp (4 to 5 dozen), unpeeled

Classic Shrimp Cocktail Sauce
3/4 Cup Ketchup
3 Tbsp Grated Horseradish in vinegar (available at supermarkets)
1 Tbsp Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
A Few Drops of Hot Sauce (optional)

Place water in a large, heavy saucepan. Add coarse salt, and bring to a boil. Add shrimp, and turn off heat. Stir. Test after 2 to 3 minutes. Removed shrimp when they seem just cooked.

Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve (at least 1 hour), then let warm slightly before serving. Serve unpeeled, or peeled, with cocktail sauce.

  1. The shrimp looks absolutely delicious, but I have to tell you that your photography and the way you set up the shot is spectacular...I especially love the first photo!

  2. As a 67-year-old shrimp cocktail lover, I appreciated your post and your beautiful photos.

However, it reminded me of a sarcastic comment I read a week or so ago (written by a New Yawk City person, no less):

" ... shrimp cocktails are SOOoo 60's, and SOOoo boring." I believe that the ignorant person was talking about our president, if I recall correctly.

Makes you wonder about some of the folks in New Yawk City.

  3. That looks good! Nice presentation!

  4. I love those classical dishes. Great photograph by the way.

  5. This looks good and inspired me to make some, but what have you done to your website format?

I'm actually laughing at myself! What have I got into? Trying to make dumplings?? Well, I have seen my late grandmother make them a long time ago. I can remember the ingredients but not the measurements! So, it took me about two hours to come up with the perfect recipes, and I'm glad I did! It was an instant hit! They were all gone, all gobbled up! Make the dough first, add about 480 to 500g of all-purpose flour with 300ml of water. Knead the dough and let it rest. You should be able to make 40 dumplings with the dough. Meanwhile, prepare the filling for the dumplings. Click here for the dumpling wrappers video.
